MILWAUKEE— More than 200 military mothers from across the country have gathered in Milwaukee this week for the Blue Star Mothers of American National Convention, a powerful event rooted in patriotism, sisterhood, and service.
Hosted at the Four Points Sheraton near Milwaukee Airport, the weeklong convention brings together women who share the unique experience of having children serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Attendees are participating in workshops, leadership training, and emotional support sessions, while forming bond with others who understand the highs and lows of military life.

“I think that people need to realize that in their community there are Blue Star Moms, but you got to look for them,” Cheri Hudson, a Blue Star Mother says. “You need to help them do something like carpentry, or mostly just having someone to talk to. What’s new in your life or your soldier’s life.”
The gathering is more than just a support network. It’s also space for advocacy and education. Members discuss ways to better serve veterans, connect with local communities, and support mental health efforts for both service members and their families.
Teresa Sumners, another Blue Star Mother, talks about how difficult the transition of their child going to the military, is for mothers.
“It’s a sisterhood of moms who have sons and daughters who serve in the military or who have already served. We support each other. Like when our sons go to deployment,” Sumners tells WTMJ. “That’s a very scary and stressful time for moms, so when we have our Blue Star Sisters, they understand what we’re going through. And they can offer us the support that we need.”
The Blue Star Mother’s Convention is open to the public in various capacities, and organizers say they hope Milwaukeeans will stop by to show their support.
