RACINE, Wis.— A former staff member at a Racine charter school has been sentenced after admitting to sexually assaulting two students.
Jamill Sanders, who worked as a behavioral interventionist at 21st Century Preparatory School, was sentenced Monday to nine months in jail and three years of probation. He’ll be allowed to leave jail for work, school, and treatment through Huber release.
According to investigators, Sanders touched two 12-year-old girls inappropriately at the school in March of 2024– in a classroom, hallway, and office. One of the students told the police the abuse happened during a reading session. Other students also came forward with complaints about inappropriate touching and comments about their bodies.
Sanders was originally facing more serious felony charges, including second-degree sexual assault of a child and repeated sexual assault. But he accepted a deal earlier this year in February, pleading no contest to reduced charges: two misdemeanors for fourth-degree sexual assault and one felony count of child abuse.
The case raised concerns within the Racine community about school safety and how misconduct by staff is handled.
