The college football playoff is predictable and boring.
Name another revenue generating sport where the regular season is more entertaining and drama-filled than the post-season? Since its inception in 2015, eleven of the possible fourteen slots in the championship game have been filled by three teams: Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State.
The entire system remains more of an exclusive invitational than it does an all-comers party.
But this isn’t about Alabama fatigue. It’s about finding ways to grow the 2nd most popular sport in America. It’s about having greater access and inclusivity. Something college basketball figured out in 1985 when the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams.
In the last decade of college basketball, Loyola of Chicago, Butler, Virginia Commonwealth and Wichita State have all reached the final four.
College football could learn a lot from college basketball. But it won’t…so long as power-5 conference schools are taken care of.
