Milwaukee’s police chief says that more than 100 law enforcement organizations will no longer assist MPD with the security operations for the 2020 Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee next month, according to a report.
Chief Alfonso Morales tells WTMJ news partner TMJ4 News that directives he has received from the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission led municipalities like West Allis and Franklin to halt their assistance of Milwaukee Police during the DNC, scheduled for August 17-20 at the Wisconsin Center.
One of those directives involves a required change in MPD practice of using tear gas and large amounts of pepper spray during policing of protests in Milwaukee this spring.
The City of Fond du Lac also told TMJ4 News they will not be participating.
The COVID-19 pandemic has led the DNC to scale back the number of people traveling for the event. Around 50,000 were scheduled to come to Milwaukee. Due to the pandemic, only hundreds are expected.
