Opening Day 2019 was about to become a repeat of so many heartbreaking moments from Brewers-Cardinals games of the past. Lorenzo Cain, however, had other ideas.
It was about 3:45 p.m. on March 28, 2019 at Miller Park. The Brewers owned a 5-4 lead on St. Louis in the top of the ninth inning, until Jose Martinez sent a long bomb toward the Cardinals’ bullpen behind the right center field wall.
As a matter of fact, the ball cleared that wall. But only for a split second.
But on this late March afternoon, the outstretched glove of Brewers centerfielder Lorenzo Cain extended beyond the wall. Martinez’ would-be home run ball found its way into Cain’s glove, who pulled it back for the first Milwaukee win of what would be their second straight playoff season.
As Cain told St. Louis on that sunny afternoon in Milwaukee, “Not today.”
