Fall is coming – recent temperatures aside – and that means it’s time for the start of the archery season for Wisconsin’s whitetail deer.
The annual tradition brings thousands of hunters into the woods and this week’s guests on WTMJ Outdoors spotlight the white tail populations across the state, recent concerns about the health of the herd, and how our guests are approaching this season.
Paul Smith, Outdoors Editor at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, visits with Steve Scaffidi as he gets set for his annual tradition, spending opening weekend at a deer camp somewhere in the state. Smith also details the latest on a growing viral concern among some of the whitetail population in southeastern Wisconsin.
Derek Johnson, Interim Deer Program Specialist for the state’s Bureau of Wildlife Management, stopped by to highlight the season start dates, herd conditions across the state, and how he turned his love of the outdoors as a child into his professional career.
