MILWAUKEE — A man accused of threatening the victim in his domestic abuse case while he was awaiting trial was sentenced to prison.

Damian Cosme-Torres, 27, of Milwaukee allegedly used a jail phone to make over 2,400 calls to the woman he is accused of strangling. Prosecutors say he also sent threatening messages to her on his jail-issued tablet.

Court records show Cosme-Torres took a plea deal on Thursday, Oct. 29. He pled guilty to one felony count of intimidating a victim and one misdemeanor of disorderly conduct. A judge dismissed a felony strangulation charge and sentenced Cosme-Torres to one year in prison with credit for time served.

Charges filed in a separate case over the phone calls and messages were also dismissed.

Last month the Milwaukee County Community Reintegration Center and the county jail suspended the messaging feature on tablets for inmates in response to multiple incidents that sparked witness intimidation concerns.
