WAUSAU, Wis.— Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany is recovering after the plane he was traveling in made an emergency landing in Lake Wausau Saturday night.
The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office says the Beechcraft K35 experienced a mechanical issue while approaching Wausau Downtown Airport.
Tiffany and pilot Leonard Boltz got out of the plane after it landed in the water and swam toward shallow water. A Wausau Fire Department airboat reached the two men around 9:05 p.m.
Both were taken to Aspirus Wausau Hospital with minor injuries.
Tiffany was released after receiving stitches for a cut above his right eye. Boltz was also released.
The plane remains in Lake Wausau, with a no-wake buoy marking the area. Boaters are being asked to stay away from the aircraft until it can be removed.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate what caused the loss of power.
John Chimel, Manager of the Wausau Downtown Airport tells WTMJ the plane piloted by 73-year-old Leonard Boltz of Pearson, Wisconsin, lost power on final approach. Boltz’s ability to maintain control of the aircraft and maneuver into water in an upright position during an emergency water landing is extraordinarily difficult and high-risk. Chimel said the pilot’s skill “was superior.”
Chimel said they are waiting for the FAA to arrive to begin an investigation on the cause of engine trouble.
