Downtown Milwaukee food truck curfew could return to 1a.m., under new proposal

Ald. Bob Bauman

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A controversial downtown Milwaukee food truck curfew currently tied up in court would be rescinded under new legislation proposed by the area’s alderman.

Bob Bauman’s proposal to be considered by the Public Safety and Health Committee next week would return the downtown food truck curfew to 1a.m.

A planned 10pm curfew intended as a plan to curb violence on Water Street was approved by the Common Council and Mayor Cavalier Johnson in April, but quickly blocked through a lawsuit filed on behalf of food truck owner Abdallah Ismail who argued the curfew would severely hurt business. Judge Jean Marie Kies then formally blocked enacting the 10p.m. curfew in June, writing in her decision that the City of Milwaukee had not offered proof that limited food truck hours would deter crowds, underage drinking and violence.

Johnson’s spokesperson tells WTMJ the mayor supports reverting the curfew back to the 1a.m. time.

A separate 11pm curfew on food trucks surrounding Burnham Park on the city’s south side would remain in place under Bauman’s legislation.
