WAUKESHA, Wis.– Morgan Geyser, convicted in the “Slender Man” stabbing case, appeared by video in court Thursday to once again file for conditional release.

Geyser was committed to the Winnebago Mental Health Institute after she stabbed her classmate at a sleepover over the fictional online horror character “Slender Man” when she was 12.

She was granted conditional release in January of last year after three failed attempts.

However, she escaped her group home in November of 2025 and fled across state lines to Illinois, where she was captured. Her conditional release was revoked in February in 2026.

Her attorney, Anthony Cotton, filed this latest petition for conditional release on August 25, arguing that the conditions of the group home and influence from an older adult caused Geyser to make an impulsive decision.

“The only way you can institutionalize a person is if they’re dangerous,” says Cotton. “It’s a terrible place. Bad conditions, obviously, poor oversight. Morgan felt like she didn’t have any similarly aged peers that were there. She made a half hearted attempt to get out of there, but she didn’t do something violent.”

The court has ordered new doctor’s evaluations that are due in November. Cotton claims Geyser is not dangerous, but the prosecution says they have some concerns.

“The state has some concerns, given the decision making process that Ms. Geyser seemed to have gone through blatantly violating the rules, cutting the bracelet off and leaving the placement that she was in,” says Waukesha DA Abbey Nickolie. “I’m very, very interested to see how stable these doctors believe that she is now.”

Geyser is back in court on November 9.
