COLGATE, Wis.– A local farm is recovering after winds from a nearby tornado destroyed hundreds of crops in Colgate.
The farmland took a hit when a tornado touched down in Hubertus, Wis., on August 18.
Basse’s Farms posted photos of beaten sunflower fields after the extreme winds tore through the area.
“Our sunflowers were honestly the best crop we have ever grown: tall, healthy, and just about ready to bloom,” said the caption. Although the sunflowers weren’t the only thing damaged.
According to the Facebook post, the winds ripped nearly one-third of the apples off the trees.
“Farming has a way of reminding you that no matter how much work you put in all year, there are many aspects that are out of your control,” said the caption. The farm added that there are plenty of apples left hanging on the tree due to a great crop season.
Basse’s Farms said they will still have a sunflower maze this year and that the Apple and Sunflower Fest will go on as planned.
The opening day of the fest is Saturday, August 29.
