LIBBY COLLINS: That first day, you said you’d sort of tried out these RVs, now you own it. Did you know everything you needed to know about driving that?
KIRA LAFOND: Absolutely not.
TIM LAFOND: Oh, heck, no.
LIBBY COLLINS: What happened?
TIM LAFOND: Well, I’ll tell this. The hardest thing in a fifth wheel is backing it up. And I have a total admiration for long, over-the-road truckers that can drive through all of the skedaddle traffic and then back right into the spot they need to.
The first day that we had it, we were going to back it into our daughter’s house in suburban Chicago. And Kira’s directing, I’m on the phone and –
KIRA LAFOND: We’re nervous.
TIM LAFOND: — she’s encouraging me, loudly, how to back it up, crank it, crank it. And then all of a sudden you heard this tremendous smash. It was the back plate window in the truck.
KIRA LAFOND: That 350.
TIM LAFOND: I had turned it so tight that the fifth wheel hit the back of the truck, which is very common to newbies, okay, and I pretty much gave up.
KIRA LAFOND: $1,300 later.
LIBBY COLLINS: And you’ve owned it a day.
KIRA LAFOND: Not even.
