Milwaukee filmmaker Kevin Rutkowski was just a kid when local streets filled with angry demonstrators, calling for changes in the open housing law.
They marched for 200 straight nights, from the northside into the south.
They’d cross the 16th Street viaduct or, as some said at the time, from Africa to Poland, where the reception was less than warm.
They were led by a priest- Father James Groppi of St. Boniface Church. A man who became someone who’s story the young Rutkowski remains fascinated by today, a half century later.
He and his wife are the makers of the documentary ‘When Hell Freezes Over.’
