Time to get the suit to the cleaners. Company's coming, and there's hostin' to be done.
May 10 brings us the annual Milwaukee Press Club Gridiron Dinner where we honor good journalism, present not one but TWO “Headliner Awards” and wrap up the night with the honoring of our Sacred Cat recipient–a national journalist of note recognized for either outstanding recent work or a career well-spent. Press Club members, award nominees and friends of the media will gather that night at the Pfister Hotel where the annual ritual will play out once again. You, of course, are invited–go to the club's website for registration information.Â
Our Headliners this time around are the former CEO of the United Way of Milwaukee and Waukesha County Mary Lou Young and former Wisconsin Governor Martin Schreiber. It was on Young's watch that the Milwaukee and Waukesha merge happened, not to mention a few record-setting fund drives, the money going to support more than 100 agencies in a four-county area.
Schreiber went into the business community after his hitch as Governor and is most recently the author of “My Two Elaines,” a book about how he and his wife are dealing with her battle with Alzheimer's. The book is a must-read for sufferers as well as caregivers.
Then, there's the Sacred Cat, the 2019 edition going to “Meet The Press” host Chuck Todd. The longest running show on network television dates back to November of 1947. In that time, it's had but 12 hosts, Todd becoming the latest in September of 2014. As his fifth anniversary approaches, what better way is there to acknowledge the accomplishment than a trip here for the Sacred Cat? Plus, he's a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan who not only knows knows global leaders–he also speaks fluent Lynn Dickey. And, if you want to know more about the Cat (who “lives” on in a case above the bar at our headquarters, the Newsroom Pub on Wells in the shadow of Milwaukee City Hall)Â just click here.
Aside from all that, we'll be serving up our annual media awards to folks in print, electronic and digital endeavors both college and pro–it's a chance to see some of your favorite folks up close and/or personal.Â
Should be a big night, and we hope to see you there. As we like to say of ourselves at the Press Club, “The only thing dead is the cat.” See for yourself May 10 at the Pfister. Come by, say “hi” and please take a picture because it's not every night you see me all done-up in a suit and tie.Â
