A recent post on the Waukesha County Sheriff Department's Facebook page has caused a stir.
The post was responding to a question about how drivers should merge.
The FB post prompted more than 130 responses. Some users celebrated the post:
“I get so angry when people just cut right in not caring who is in the other lane.“
Other users questioned the department's advice:
“Wait a minute, what happened to the 'zipper merge'???
I thought we were supposed to use all lanes and then zipper merge at the end of the lane? You can add a 3rd driver to that list, the driver that doesn’t know wtf to do because the authority figures can’t make up their damn minds!“
Another online post:
“During the zipper merge on the freeway (and still on 45 by Froedtert) it was (is) encouraged to remain in the lane till it ends. Is that incorrect?“
In the past, the Wisconsin DOT, and others, have urged drivers to remain in the same lane until it ends before merging.
In fact, drivers on EB I-94 in Milwaukee County are urged to stay in their lanes.
I reached out to the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department for more details. We hope to hear back this afternoon.
