The Marquette Golden Eagles blew an 18-point 2nd half lead in a 65 to 54 loss to Connecticut on Tuesday night.
But this was one of those rare instances in sports when the result was seemingly irrelevant.
At the end of the day, it was a college basketball game.
The message the Golden Eagles sent before the game means everything, though.
As they jogged out for warmups, Marquette players wore their alternate black Jordan Brand uniforms.
Some players wore shirts reading “Black Lives Matter” across their chests.
It was their way of expressing their disappointment in Tuesday’s decision to not charge the officers in the police involved shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha.
More than that, though, it was their way of continuing to keep the fight for racial and social justice front of mind.
Countless Milwaukeeans, Wisconsinites, and Americans are waking up hurt this morning.
If you’re one of those people, I am truly, truly sorry.
As a 28-year old white dude, I can never fully understand your pain.
But, what I can do is stand with you, beside you, and continue to fight for what’s right.
If you’re not hurting this morning, I encourage you to try to do the same.
Empathize. Listen. Support.
Giannis isn’t walking the snowy streets of Milwaukee with thousands of Wisconsinites right now.
The Bucks and Brewers aren’t boycotting games like they did over the summer.
But the fight is not over.
Not even close.
Good on the Marquette players for reminding us of that.
