My name is Bryan Dee. I’m a proud graduate of Marquette University.
And I hate the Wisconsin Badgers.
Yep, I said it.
Marquette and Wisconsin renew their basketball rivalry tonight.
A lot of people ask me why my hatred exists? Why such anger? Why such animosity? Why can’t you just root for both schools?
My answer? It’s a rivalry.
You don’t see Red Sox fans rooting for the Yankees.
Or Ohio State fans rooting for Michigan.
Or cats rooting for dogs.
Or people making peanut butter and ketchup sandwiches.
Some things just don’t go together.
That’s the way I feel about the Badgers.
I don’t root for them in basketball, football, hockey, checkers, it doesn’t matter.
I want to see my rival lose.
And ya know what? That’s the way it should be. Wisconsin fans should feel the same way about me.
I’m hope that you’re fuming red reading this, like that gaudy color that you’ll never catch me wearing.
Rivalries make sports fun.
You’re supposed to pick a side. You’re supposed to feel pride when you win. You’re supposed to feel embarrassed when you lose.
So, tonight, whoever you’re rooting for, and hopefully, it’s Marquette, do me this simple favor: embrace the hate.
The hate is everything we love about sports.
