It's not every year that the typically draft-and-develop Green Bay Packers add eight free agents (not including this year's undrafted rookies) to their roster.
But this year, the Packers enter their season opener with the Seattle Seahawks with some normally unexpected findings – two of whom they signed in the past five days: linebacker Ahmad Brooks and defensive lineman Quinton Dial.
Yet in the eyes of coach Mike McCarthy, this is simply a different result from a normal operation for a personnel department that for the last 25 years has kept the Packers mostly at a playoff level.
“It's completely a focus of how our personnel guys have always gone about it. You're always evaluating year-round. This is not anything new,” said McCarthy on WTMJ's “Wisconsin's Morning News.”
“I know the way it's shaken out may be different than prior years, but it's a reflection of the great job our personnel guys are doing.”
Listen to the full interview below, where McCarthy also talks about the painful process of cutting players, and the importance of relationships he still keeps with those players.
