Ron Harrison was in the Navy during the Korean War. He first went over in 1951.
“We did aircraft carrier screening where we would run with the carriers while they were doing their missions. We would also do shore bombardment,” he said.
They would sit about three to four miles off the coast with guns that could shoot about eight. While Harrison’s ship never got hit, a couple other ships did.
“We wouldn’t get much sleep because when the guns are firing, I mean, it’s noisy.”
Harrison was only 17 at the time.
“It was a new experience for me and it really helped me grow up and figure out what was going on.”
Now almost eighty-two, Harrison had the opportunity to take an Honor Flight.
“That for me was a fantastic experience. I loved every moment of it.”
