A Republican lawmaker from Northern Wisconsin is calling for Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers to resign after demonstrators took down two statues and attacked a state senator outside the Wisconsin State Capitol building Tuesday night.
“If he cannot or will not regain control of the streets, he should resign immediately. Enough is enough,” US Congressman Tom Tiffany said in a statement posted Wednesday on his web site. Tiffany specifically criticized Evers about law enforcement response to demonstrations which turned violent in Madison weeks ago following the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police on Memorial Day.
“Governor Evers has ignored this crisis for weeks,” Tiffany’s statement continued. “He has disregarded clear warning signs and repeated incidents of looting, mayhem and intimidation. He has stood idly by as the State Capitol was damaged, statues and monuments were defaced and destroyed, and State Street mobbed by looters and vandals.”
Evers stated earlier Wednesday that he is willing to use the National Guard to handle the situation.
