The longtime mayor of Milwaukee will keep his job after one of the most controversial overall spring elections in recent memory, due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
Tom Barrett will extend his 16-year run as Milwaukee Mayor, defeating challenger and fellow Democrat Lena Taylor. The race was called by TMJ4 News.
As of 6:20 p.m., Barrett owned a 63% to 37% lead on Taylor, a 24,000 vote lead per the Journal Sentinel.
Much of the campaigning in the race was curtailed due to coronavirus. In-person voting was drastically shrunk due to how coronavirus led to 80 to 85 percent of City of Milwaukee poll workers to decline doing their job, and Milwaukee’s election commission was forced to shrink the number of polling places from 180 to five.
