On Monday, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett gave the city’s official “State of the City” address for 2020.
He did it with an unofficial flag over his head during the presentation, the popular but controversial People’s Flag.
“This is one that thousands of people love. I like this flag. My wife likes this flag. I’m going to make my wife happy,” Mayor Tom Barrett told WTMJ’s Wisconsin’s Afternoon News Monday.
However, the Milwaukee Common Council is not happy enough with the flag to vote on it as an official replacement for the blue flag which has been official for decades.
Even after a long privately-organized but open-to-the-public contest for a design of a new city flag, the Common Council decided to start from scratch on attempting to come up with a new design.
“I know the (Common) Council has had difficulty making a decision. I don’t think we need an official decision,” said the Mayor.
“We’ve got the flag. Let’s keep going.”
