Medical professionals are fighting a world war against a deadly virus, unlike any fight they’ve ever had before – one where they’re risking their own health and life to save others.
The fight against coronavirus is even more poignant when it comes to children, like those Children’s Wisconsin helps.
“We need to be here for the kids. Even though kids don’t necessarily have the same degree of symptoms with COVID, we have a lot of very medically fragile kids that we’ve got to protect,” said Peggy Troy, the CEO of Children’s Wisconsin.
She says that like most hospitals, hers is in a need for the kind of masks that truly protect people.
“The real issues are the highly-protective masks, like surgical masks and what you’ve heard about N-95’s, because they add another layer of protection,” she said. (Guidelines on making masks here.)
“There has been a community outpouring for support. We’ve gotten several N-95’s. Not nearly enough, because we’re in a crisis phase.”
The second way she suggests is through giving blood.
“We have critical shortages because we don’t have the same number of testing sites,” said Troy.
“Versiti Blood Center is willing to set up donation sites.”
There are other ways you can help, via donations – suggestions from Children’s Wisconsin are listed here.
But the best way she suggests to help in general: Stay home, and wash your hands often.
