MILWAUKEE — Cardinal Robert Prevost, O.S.A. was elected as the first American pope on May 8, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. The Chicago native was appointed Cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023.
Pope Leo XIV was elected after four ballots, which is a relatively brief Conclave. An unexpected choice, many think Pope Leo will continue to take the Catholic Church in the direction Pope Francis was heading.
“Sometimes āwe ātalk āabout āthe āPope āas āpontiff. āThat’s āfrom āa āLatin āword, āpontifex, āand āit āmeans ābridge ābuilder āor āpath maker.āThe āmodel āthat āhe āhad āas āa ābishop āwas āin āthe āone āChrist, āwe āare āone. āāSo āhere’s āa āman āwho āwants āto āunite. āHe āwants āto ābuild ābridges āand ābring ā⢠āthe āchurch ātogether āin āits ādiversity,” āsays Auxiliary Bishop of Milwaukee Jeffrey Haines. “It’s āa ājoyful āday. āWe’re āso āhappy āto āhave ānew āleader. We āmiss āFrancis āand āall āhe āstood āfor, ābut āit ālooks ālike āwe’re āgoing āto āhave āa āpope āwho’s āgoing āto ātry āto ākeep āa ālot āof āthat āspirit āalive.”
Pope Leo grew up in the Chicago land area. He is the first Augustinian friar to be chosen to be pope as well.
“He āhas ābeen āknown āin āwhat āthe āwork āhe āhas ādone āas āa ābishop āin āPeru āand āthen āin āhis āown āorder āand āactually āworking āin āthe āVatican āas āāa āquiet āguy who āslowly ābrings āpeople ātogether āand āwho ālistens āwell,” says Bishop Haines. “That āalways āleads to āgreater āunity. āWhen āyou’re āa ālistener it shows āyou ācare.”
While unsure if the new pope was ever in Milwaukee, Bishop Haines adds “I am ānot āaware, but it āwouldn’t āsurprise āme because āthere āare āāAugustinians āall āover āthe āplace. āWe ādon’t āknow. āHe āmight ālike ācustard, āyou āknow.”
