Republican Congressman Glenn Grothman called the attempt to object the Electoral Votes for Arizona and Pennsylvania “irresponsible” and a “theatrical performance.” Grothman was one of three Wisconsin House republicans (Bryan Steil and Mike Gallagher) to vote against the motion to object late Wednesday.
“For a while I was prepared to vote and make a symbolic objection,” Grothman told WTMJ’s Wis. Morning News on Thursday. “(My colleagues) were saying they wanted to send a message. It’s a irresponsible thing to do because what if everyone had voted the same way?”
“There were (GOP members) that implied this vote was a second election,” he said. “That’s absurd. I don’t believe it was explained to (Trump) supporters that this was a perfunctory vote. I know people from Wisconsin who thought this was a real vote and somehow President Trump (could remain president).”
Grothman cited examples in recent history when other lawmakers had made similar votes to object.
“The electoral college is a big deal,” he said. “The notion that Congress can undo an election is a dangerous one.”
