The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office has identified a Wauwatosa man as the victim of a homicide investigation at Devil’s Lake State Park.
In a statement, Sauk County Sheriff Chip Meister says 24-year-old John Craig Schmutzer was found on the Grottos trail on the south side of the park just after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 14, 2020.
An autopsy determined Schmutzer died due to a stabbing.
Sheriff Meister says Schmutzer had been in other parts of the state in the days prior to his death. They include the Hilldale Shopping Center in Madison, Wildcat Mountain State Park in Vernon County, and the LaValle area in northwest Sauk County.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. More information will not be made public until the investigation is concluded.
