Wauwatosa Police says what began as a protest became a large disturbance that cause property damage in the city Wednesday evening.
It took place following the decision by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office not to charge Officer Joseph Mensah for the shooting death of Alvin Cole.
The City of Wauwatosa had issued a state of emergency, which includes an overnight curfew of 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. through the night of October 12.
The department says protestors had gathered around City Hall around 8:50 p.m. when they declared them an unlawful assembly.
At 9:11, the department got word of windows being broken on West North Avenue between Wauwatosa Avenue and Swan Boulevard. Five minutes later another unlawful assembly was declared and gas was deployed. Rocks were still thrown in that area for a short while longer.
At about 9:45, the department says they were working to disperse the rest of the crowd. They add not everyone who was in the protest group meant harm.
No word of how many people were arrested or the amount of damage done.
