MILWAUKEE- In a ceremony unlike any that came before it, community leaders gathered for a private ceremony at the War Memorial Center to remember the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001.
“The question arose as to whether we should meet this year, but the County Executive and I immediately said ‘absolutely yes,'” Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said. “This is too important a memorial for us to do virtually; we felt it was important, even with a limited crowd size, that we be here at the memorial.”
Other guests at this morning’s event include acting Milwaukee Police Chief Michael Brunson, Milwaukee County Sheriff Earnell Lucas, Milwaukee Fire Chief Mark Rohlfing as well as Common Council President Cavalier Johnson and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, the latter two offered comments of their own.
“Today we honor the lives of the nearly three-thousand souls that were lost, the survivors, and family members,” Crowley said. “Ultimately the fear that gripped us did not win. It was the optimistic spirit of the American People that brought us together and moved us forward.”
