A former Milwaukee Police Officer facing homicide charges has resigned from the department.
An MPD spokesperson says Michael Mattioli tendered his resignation Tuesday, hours after pleading not guilty in the choking death of Joel Acevedo.
Mattioli was facing an internal review over allegations that he choked Acevedo to death after a party at his home back in April.
Mattioli had been on paid leave from the department pending the results of that investigation.
In a written statement, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said he was pleased that Mattioli stepped down and that taxpayers would no longer be responsible for his salary.
Mattioli is due back in court on October 30th.
