The Governor of Wisconsin has declared a state of emergency after 48 hours of violent protests following the shooting of Jacob Blake, 29, by Kenosha Police on Sunday.
Governor Tony Evers has doubled the amount of National Guard troops to 250, after sending 125 troops there to assist law enforcement and firefighters Monday night. Numerous buildings were still burned down or damaged.
“Any Guard members called to active duty may only be used to provide support to local law enforcement and to protect critical infrastructure and cultural institutions necessary for the well-being of the community, and to provide support to first responders such as the Kenosha Fire Department,” a statement from the Governor’s office said.
Unrest also happened in other parts of the state, including Madison and Appleton.
Police shot Blake in the back up to seven times on Sunday. The incident was captured on video and quickly went viral online. His father said that he is paralyzed from the waist down, though it is not clear if he will be permanently paralyzed.
