The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says an approximately 10 year old mare had to be euthanized after testing positive for Eastern equine encephalitis in Dunn County. It’s the first positive case this year.
The EEE virus is transmitted via mosquito bites. Horses, other animals and humans can be infected but the virus can’t be passed directly between horses or between horses and people.
