Every attendee, staff, media and law enforcement officer at next month’s 2020 Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee will be given a daily coronavirus test, according to WTMJ news partner Milwaukee Business Journal.
Organizers are setting up two sites for all who would need tests, with one of them at the Wisconsin Center, the site of the smaller-than-planned convention. COVID-19 concerns have led organizers to keep delegates at home for an event where 50,000 guests were forecasted to come to Milwaukee.
The convention was also delayed from mid-July to August 17-20.
“Ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone involved with the convention is our top priority,” DNCC Senior Communications Director Katie Peters said in a statement. “After consultation with public health officials, the Democratic National Convention Committee will implement robust health and safety protocols that will govern the convention’s in-person activities and keep attendees safe before and during the convention.”
“The health protocols in place for the Democratic National Convention appear to be thoughtful and thorough. I am pleased the convention organizers have consulted with the Milwaukee Health Department,” Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said in a statement. “While it is important to protect every person attending the convention, it is also important to protect the entire Milwaukee community. These protocols establish reasonable requirements in order to prevent additional COVID-19 infections in Milwaukee.”
