He’s a man on a mission.
“I concentrate on picking up plastic and Styrofoam.”
For the past 6 years Danny Giombi of St. Francis has been collecting trash along Lake Michigan every Saturday morning.
Giombi’s trash and treasure filled journey started in a pretty unexpected way.
“I used to always walk my dog here and pick up after him and then my dog died. That was in 2012. As crazy as it sounds I was walking and I saw a bunch of trash and I said God give me a bag and I’ll pick it up. Sure enough there was a bag there. I said that a couple of times but these bags were nasty but I kept picking them up. So I started bringing my own bags,” said Giombi.
An adventure ensued from that moment on.
You can imagine all the dirty plastic pop bottles and broken flip-flops he finds, but he also finds bits of treasure along the way.
He’ll tell you it’s usually nothing of great value but fun trinkets that spark joy on his jaunts along the shoreline.
