Sheboygan County will have to wait another year before feeling the impact of the Ryder Cup after the PGA decided to postpone September’s event until next year, but it could be worse.
“We were going to fill motels up from Chicago all the way up to Green Bay,” Sheboygan Mayor Mike Vandersteen tells WTMJ’s Wisconsin’s Morning News. “I can understand them holding on to try and see if it could be held but unfortunately this second wave of Coronavirus has wiped out that opportunity.”
Vandersteen says the event was to have a $145-million dollar impact and bring roughly 65,000 visitors to Sheboygan, Kohler, and Whistling Straits.
Vandersteen says they’re continuing to make the best of a bad situation, “I guess you could call this the practice round and we’ll be better prepared for next year.”
“We knew this was looming but we were waiting for the final word from the PGA and Whistling Straits,” the Mayor added, “You were seeing all the 4th of July events canceled, Brat Days was canceled, so it was very hard to imagine that this could take place and still be safe.”
