A community member who works to better relations between Milwaukee’s minority community and the city’s police department says that a lack of communication between the two could lead to a long, hot and painful next few months.
“We’re going to be in danger for a very long summer,” activist Tracey Dent told WTMJ’s John Mercure on Wednesday. “As of right now, no one is listening to each other. The community is not listening to police. Police is not listening to the community.”
Dent was on the scene when about a dozen people were injured in a series of shootings, alleged arson and demonstrations in the afternoon and evening connected to the disappearance of two teenagers who since have been found.
“They burned down the evidence,” Dent continued. “We should not do that. Just like looting. I do not condone all the looting and property damage, stuff like that. We need to stop that.”
Police say they have not seen substantive evidence of human trafficking at the house, despite claims from community members to the contrary. The MPD said they had been called to the home many times between Monday and Tuesday.
