There hasn’t been much of a lull for bicycle stores during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While more are eager to get out as the weather gets warmer, demand was growing even while temperatures weren’t as nice.
“It’s typically very seasonal and there are waves that come and go depending on weather and all sorts of other things,” said Steve Whitford, Co-owner of South Shore Cyclery. “We’ve seen a huge hit early on in the pandemic. A lot of people have time on their hands and all the health clubs are closed, so a lot of people are trying to get out riding.”
Whitford says while the demand for new bikes might be high, the supply for them is not.
“A lot of our suppliers are completely cleaned out of bikes.” he said. “We still have a decent selection and we have some stuff coming, but with that being the case a lot of people are looking for reasonably priced bikes.”
He says prices aren’t necessarily going up because of the shortage, but variety might be more selective.
