A new program will turn about 10 miles of roads in the City of Milwaukee from vehicle traffic to mostly pedestrian traffic.
Milwaukee Active Streets is a collaboration between the city and Milwaukee County Parks.
The program is designed to encourage people to get outside near their homes while still practicing social distancing guidelines.
The decision was made to go forward with the program as green spaces have seen more people using them during the coronavirus pandemic, which puts pressure on keeping a six-foot barrier between people when out in public.
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says the program as been in the works for some time, adding a good trial run could lead to a permanent program after the pandemic.
Milwaukee County Parks Interim Director Jen Francis says people who live on streets that are part of the program will still be able to access it with vehicles, as will delivery trucks and emergency vehicles.
