Companies across Wisconsin are having to shift the way they do business as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
The beer industry is no exception.
While it’s been reported that more consumption is taking place at home, that doesn’t make up for what would have been sold in local restaurants and bars.
“The beer is selling in stores,” New Glarus Brewing founder and president Deb Carey tells WTMJ. “But we’ve lost all of our draft business sadly with tavern and restaurant restrictions. We’re kind of limping along.”
Carey says their focus remains on the safety of employees.
“The bigger problem is not so much the sales, but we have very limited ability to make beer with a skeleton crew. We’ve broken the teams into three so that, essentially, a third of the people work and then they’re home for two weeks and then work a week and then home two weeks. It’s hard to run a business that way, but it does keep everybody safe.”
