Universities closing down in-person classes. Large gatherings like pro and college sports and concerts being canceled or postponed. In just a few days, many different regularities of life in Wisconsin are changing due to coronavirus concerns.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said on WTMJ that “it’s not a one-size-fits-all” situation in terms of declaring statewide school closures, as Maryland and Ohio have done.
“We’ll be working with individual districts to see how that works,” said Evers to John Mercure.
“I’m reluctant, and I also believe local school districts are able to make those decisions.”
Some of the reason for urban districts to possibly stay open in comparison to smaller communities has to do with the role those urban schools play far beyond educating children – often, they provide meals that students cannot afford to get at home. And that’s just one example.
“It’s important in urban areas that we don’t be premature about this. Urban school districts feed lots of kids and serve them in other ways than schooling,” said the Governor.
