The City of Milwaukee confirms that a child has died from the flu, the first pediatric flu death of the 2019-20 flu season.
This is the first death after 400 hospitalizations for the flu in Milwaukee.
“We are incredibly saddened to learn that a child has died of complications related to influenza, our thoughts are with the child’s family during this difficult time,” said Commissioner of Health Dr. Jeanette Kowalik in a statement.
“It’s not too late to get your flu shot in order to protect yourself, your family, and our community, I encourage everyone 6 months of age to get vaccinated if they haven’t already.”
The city’s health office says that infants, young children, elderly, pregnant women, and others with major medical conditions are at the most severe risk of hospitalization and death if they have the flu.
People from Milwaukee who are six months of age and older can receive free flu vaccines at walk-in immunization clinics. Click here for information.
