Two officers are in the hospital with minor injuries after a pursuit that ended in a crash on Milwaukee’s north side Wednesday evening.
Police say it happened just after 8 p.m. near 70th and Hampton.
“At 7:58 p.m. at the intersection of Appleton and Capitol, one of our marked squads encountered a reckless auto,” says Captain David Salazar. “It then attempted to stop that vehicle, which nearly side-swiped our squad.”
Salazar says the pursuit continued for three minutes until a responding squad arrived and was struck. “The vehicle that was being pursued was traveling south and broad-sided the squad on the passenger side, causing significant damage to the squad and the vehicle being pursued.”
The officers in the vehicle, a 29-year-old with two years experience, and a 22-year-old with one year experience, sustained minor blunt force trauma to the right side of their bodies. They are both expected to make a full recovery.
Salazar says the suspect reported minor injuries consistent with airbag deployment. “The suspect is in custody for first-degree recklessly endangering safety and fleeing and officer causing injury.”
An investigation is ongoing.
