The Racine County Sheriff’s Office says a 20-year-old woman was placed in custody after allegedly being under the influence and passed out at the wheel with young children inside her car, while also discovering she had heroin.
The Sheriff’s Office says in a news release that at about 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, a deputy found a vehicle with a smashed windshield stopped in traffic at the intersection of State Highway 20 and Racine County Highway D in Rochester.
The deputy found the woman passed out, the car running in gear, and the woman’s foot on the brake pedal. The deputy also discovered a three-year-old and five-year-old in the back seat of the car.
The news release says the five-year-old child unlocked the passenger door so the deputy could put the car in park.
Investigators discovered that the car had struck a mailbox on South Colony Avenue in Yorkville and kept going another 10 miles.
The deputy had the driver take a field sobriety test, which she failed. She also had heroin on her possession.
The children were placed with Racine County Children Protection Services.
The suspect is being held on six combined counts, including OWI with passengers under 16, narcotics, drug paraphernalia possession and recklessly endangering safety.
