The City of Milwaukee will pay the family of Derek Williams $2 million in a settlement of a civil rights lawsuit against the city, according to a report.
The Journal Sentinel says that the two sides settled in the case eight years after Williams died while in police custody after “begging for help and gasping for air.”
According to the report, Williams’ children who are eight, nine and ten years old will receive the money.
Investigations by the Milwaukee Police Department, the city’s Fire and Police Commission and District Attorney John Chisholm all cleared police, according to the Journal Sentinel.
After Chisholm reopened the case, an inquest jury suggested misdemeanor charges against three offiers, but the report says that a special prosecutor chose not to file charges.
