Lame duck bills are now lame duck laws.
Governor Scott Walker putting an end to the debate over whether or not he’ll sign a slate of bills that will limit some of the scope and power of governor-elect Tony Evers, by signing the package during a ceremony Friday in Green Bay.
In North Carolina, the legislature in 2016 passed a similar set of bills when voters chose democrat Roy Cooper over republican incumbent Pat McCrory. Those bills were immediately challenged by Cooper and the democrats.
“The pushback was swift by Cooper and democrats on his side,” North Carolina Political Science Professor Jason Roberts says. “The bills have been locked up in the courts since 2016 and democrats have proves successful in thwarting them up through the Supreme Court.”
Governor-elect Tony Evers’ office has not publically said what he intends to do when he takes office on January 7 th , but a lawsuit is likely. Roberts says it’ll be interesting to see how the situation plays out in Wisconsin and Michigan.
Governor Walker and Assembly Speaker Robin Vos have both called the furor over the bills ‘overblown’, and liken the moves to putting the entire legislature on an equal playing field, not stunting the power of the governor.
