The youngest recipient of a new procedure gains sight for the first time.
Three year old McKinley Sovey underwent a special gene therapy procedure six months after the FDA approved the new treatment.
McKinley was born almost completely blind with the ability to only see the contrast of light. Doctors discovered she had a rare retinal disease.
Sovey’s doctor, Dr. Stephen Russell works in the Department of Opthamology and visual sciences at The Univeristy of Iowa. Russell who did both of Mckinley’s surgeries says the procedure is basically forcing DNA into the right cell.
