A fight broke out in a Milwaukee courtroom Wednesday after a former daycare owner was sentenced in the death of a 7-week-old baby.
It occurred shortly after 37-year-old Claudette Mitchell was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison for the death of Savaiyah Reid, who was fatally injured at her daycare in August 2017.
Originally charged with first-degree reckless homicide, Mitchell pleaded guilty in September to neglecting a child, resulting in death. In court, Mitchell said she did not cause the baby’s injuries but feels responsible.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office says the altercation involved about 50 members of the defendant’s and victim’s families and friends. They did have added security in place due to actions during a previous hearing, but Wednesday’s fight occurred when the defendant’s side did not comply with deputy orders as the victim’s side was being led out of the courtroom.
Additional deputies and DA investigators were called to restore order. One person was tased by a DA investigator, and there is a claim that another person was assaulted. The sheriff’s office will review the fight and determine if any charges will be filed.
