An investigation continues into a hit-and-run accident in Western Wisconsin that killed three Girl Scouts and one woman Saturday morning.
Sgt. Daniel Sokup of the Lake Hallie Police Department says a pickup truck entered the ditch along County Highway P near Highway 29, where a Girl Scout troop and adults were picking up trash.
In addition to the four dead, a fifth person was also hit. That person, also a Girl Scout member, was last reported in critical condition.
WEAU-TV reports that the driver of the pickup, identified as 21-year-old Colton Treu of Chippewa Falls, fled the scene of the crash but later turned himself in.
All three girls who died did attend elementary schools in the Chippewa Falls School Distrit. In a statement, the district says they are “deeply saddened by this tragedy.” They will have additional counselors at the schools Monday.
