Most baseball-loving kids dream of the chance to hit a game-winning home run. Many amplify their schoolyard dream by pretending it’s a grand slam.
For Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Sixto Lezcano, such crazy dreams became reality with a sellout crowd watching on Opening Day at County Stadium.
The Brewers were tied 5-5 with the Boston Red Sox in the bottom of the ninth inning. With two outs, Boston hurler Dick Drago walked Gorman Thomas, loading the bases and setting Lezcano up for a fairy tale ending.
Hall of Fame announcer Bob Uecker’s call on WTMJ described it all.
“The pitch to Sixto…there’s a DRIIIIIIIIVE to deep right center! Way back goes Evans…it’s got a chance to goooo! GOOOONE! Heyyyyyy, a grand slam for Lezcano!”
As County Stadium collectively went cuckoo, boyhood dreams became history.
