Details of the deal remain unknown as the Brewers have not officially announced any signing.
The 31-year-old was drafted by the Pirates in 2009, and made his major league debut with the team during September callups in 2012.
He was traded to the Red Sox in December of 2012 and has played there since. That has included an All-Star appearance in 2015 and a World Series title in 2018.
In 2019, Holt appeared in 87 games, hitting .297 while playing most of the time at second base. He did also play first place, shortstop, third base, right field and left field.
