There’s a chance high school sports could return sometime this summer, if the state of Wisconsin’s safer-at-home order gets altered to allow it.
“We voted to allow 30 days of contact this summer, should restrictions by the state be lifted, where teams could actually get together, practice and play games,” said WIAA President Dennis Birr on the Steve Scaffidi Show Monday.
“If we get six weeks of the summer, that would be a really nice thing for the seniors.”
Activity was curtailed, along with all school activities due to safety measures put in place by the Evers administration to close schools in mid-March.
High school athletes are currently highly limited from any team activity due to the current WIAA-manded efforts. They are able to do individual workouts at home.
But if they are allowed to return, it’s unsure how things would be organized at this point, due to the never-before faced nature of coronavirus.
“What might it look like? We’re playing a game in the dark, not knowing what the restrictions will be by then. Every place is trying to make potential plans, knowing they might change….what would practice look like? What would games look like? How would locker rooms work?” Birr asked.
“You start with your best guess, start making plans and adjust them as we get new information.”
